Presidente Clinton, concedi la grazia a Leonard Peltier! |

L’Associazione
per i Popoli Minacciati (APM) chiede, in una lettera aperta al Presidente
degli Stati Uniti, Bill Clinton, di concedere finalmente la grazia il noto
attivista indiano per i diritti civili Leonard Peltier. “Lei
è ancora il Presidente e può ancora riparare, almeno in parte,
alle ingiustizie del passato. Leonard Peltier, attivista per i diritti
civili, è gravemente malato e Lei lo può liberare”.
Per Peltier la grazia è l’unica possibilità di ottenere la
libertà, giacché per il diritto degli Stati Uniti le possibilità
di revisione del processo sono esaurite. Peltier soffre di diabete ed è
quasi cieco da un occhio a causa di un ictus.
Nel
1977 Peltier, accusato di aver ucciso due agenti del FBI, è stato
condannato a due ergastoli. È scandaloso che tale processo non sia
stato annullato successivamente. Nel 1986, in un processo di appello, perfino
il pubblico ministero dovette ammettere che nessuno è in grado di
sapere chi abbia ucciso i due agenti durante la sparatoria del 1975 tra
FBI e membri dell’American Indian Movement (AIM) nella riserva di Pine
Ridge. Non ebbe conseguenze neppure la ritrattazione di una supposta testimone
oculare, costretta a testimoniare il falso dal FBI. Negli anni ’70 numerosi
attivisti indiani per i diritti civili furono assassinati dagli “squadroni
della morte” del FBI.
Per il rilascio di Leonard Peltier si stanno impegnando da anni i Consigli Tribali dei nativi americani, ed attivisti per i diritti umani, organizzazioni religiose ed uomini politici di tutto il mondo: Harry Belafonte, Nelson Mandela, Robert Redford, l’ex Presidente tedesco Richard von Weiszäcker, 55 parlamentari del Congresso degli Stati Uniti, 48 parlamentari dei Paesi Bassi e, nel 1996, più di 70 parlamentari del Bundestag tedesco.

for Leonard Peltier
Dear Mr. President:
Leonard Peltier, who received a double life sentence in 1977 for allegedly having shot and killed two FBI agents, has served more than 24 years in prison, despite the fact that the reasons for his sentence had been very dubious. All the evidence available now indicates that the FBI had manipulated the trial by intimidating witnesses and providing false statements. The ballistic reports prove that the deadly bullets did not match Leonard Peltier's gun. The 8th Circuit Court of Appeals found that the withholding of documents cast a strong doubt and that the FBI was guilty of a clear abuse of the investigative process. Even the Attorney General of the time, Lynn Crooks, expressed doubts on Peltier's guilt in 1986 before the court of appeal. Leonard Peltier has denied the crime from the very beginning. Regrettably, the Justice of the USA has not had the greatness to correct the error made. Mr. President, we appeal to you to release the civil rights activist Peltier whose fate is closely observed by large sections of the international public. The release of Leonard Peltier would provide an important step in national reconciliation between the United States government and the Native American people of your country. For Peltier, it is literally a matter of life and death, because Peltier now suffers from diabetes, a heart condition and high blood pressure. Please, release him immediately. Yours sincerely, |
